Barangay Ginebra avoided outright elimination from the quarterfinals as the Kings snapped a four-game with a 75-67 win over the Hapee Philippine Team in the Samsung PBA Governors Cup at the Philsports Arena last night.
The Kings came up with a vicious fourth-quarter assault to break free from a see-sawing contest en route to their only their second win in nine outings.
Ginebra, the pre-tournament favorite plagued by injuries not only to its local players but imports as well, needs to sweep its last two games against Red Bull and RP Selecta to gain a possible playoff crack at the quarterfinals.
RP Hapee suffered a third straight loss but remained in strong contention for the next round with a 4-5 win-loss card. It plays its last two games against Airfreight 2100/FedEx and San Miguel Beer.
Brian Green scored 13 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter, fuelling a big run by the Kings from a 52-all deadlock at the end of the third quarter. Then he sent Ginebra fans in the bleachers cheering no end as he hit the 75-point mark in the last 10 seconds on a free throw, giving all ticket-holders in the venue free Whopper under the Burger King promo.
Green also tallied nine rebounds, three assists and one steal, backing up partner Jarrod Gee who hacked out another double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds.
Talk N Text, seizing league leadership on FedExs stunner of erstwhile frontrunner Purefoods Friday, pulled way from its rivals as it stretched its amazing streak to seven games by blasting Alaska Milk, 84-67, in the second game
Alaska fell to 4-5.
