Wild card completes romp in ITF tourney

Wild card Chuang Chia-Jung of Chinese Taipei capped her remarkable campaign in the $10,000 Union Cement Corp.-International Tennis Federation Women’s Circuit yesterday, beating Fil-Am Diane Matias and winning the top purse of $1,600 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Chuang, a 16-year-old Kaoshiung native, dominated the RP-born Matias, who migrated to the United States a decade ago, in their one-hour and five-minute match to likewise earn five singles and doubles points in this annual event.

"I saw her play in the semifinal round and I studied her style so I came in this game well-prepared and without pressure," said Chuang, who later teamed up with Weng Tzu-Ting to beat the duo of Chao Hsaio-Han of Chinese Taipei and Khoo Chin-Bee of Malaysia, 6-4, 6-4, for the doubles crown. — Joey Villar
