Pinay pug wins RP’s first gold

The Philippines’ Mitchel Martinez outclassedChina’s Chan Dan late Wednesday evening to score a Referee Stopped Contest (RSC), RSC in the first round for the lightwelterweight title in the first Asian Women’s Boxing Championships in Bangkok, Thailand for the country’s first and only gold medal.

Earlier, four Filipinas received their respective bronze medals in the 10 nation’s women’s tournament dominated by powerhouse North Korea which grabbed five golds and a bronze and China which went home with three golds, two silvers and two bronze medals.

Host Thailand had one gold, two silvers and five bronzes to edge the Philippines with 1-0-4 slate.

The Philippine bronze medalists are Alice Kate Aparri in 45 kgs., Librada Tamson in 48 kgs., Jouviliet Chilem in the 57 kgs. and Rosie Villarito in the 60 kgs.

The Philippine women’s team which was sent here by Pacific Asphalt and Concrete Mix and ALI Sportswear and supported by the Philippine Sports Commission emerged as third runner-up in the overall standing.

Martinez, a Philippine National Police officer based in Camp Crame, followed to the letter combined instructions from Philippine Navy’s national coaches Roel Velasco and Glicerio Catolico to hack out the win that woudl surley serve as a boost to the fledgling sport in the country.
