RP five bows to Russians, cops 4th

Kaohsiung county, Taiwan An injury-plagued Philippines-FedEx team failed to sustain the momentum of a courageous first half and yielded to a tall but fast Russian Army, 81-71, in the 24th William Jones Cup at the Feng Sheng Stadium here Friday night.
The Filipinos placed fourth in a field of eight teams but earned the respect of the hometown crowd which cheered them on against the stratospheric but agile Russians.
Playing with a limping Ranidel de Ocampo and without injured point guard Richard Melencio and slotman Val Domingo, the RP team even led in the first and second quarters at 19-16 and 33-29, respectively.
