Southwoods survives Riviera

Southwoods survived a big scare from former champion Riviera, winning two matches on the last hole for its third consecutive win in a rainy week 4 of the 2001 Federation League eliminations.

Larry Tojino and Jimmy Borromeo took the high-low match via a 1-up decision and Marty Ilagan and Butch Brodett also settled the aggregate issue in the same manner to highlight a 4-0 rout.

As expected, Angelo Que and Jerome Delariarte played big to lead partners Jojo Lee (scramble) and Boy Escano (best ball) to victory in Group I.

Sta. Elena, still smarting from its big loss to Riviera last week, regained lost ground by defeating Orchard, 3-1, in the 14-team tourney featuring teams from the country’s most exclusive clubs.

Typhoon Jolina disrupted the league’s schedule as the Wack Wack-Forest Hills duel and the Manila Golf-Canlubang showdown setto were postponed because of bad weather. Group II leader Mt. Malarayat and Mimosa were set to play yesterday.

The Sta. Elena squad assembled a potent force that got the needed three points for a victory.

Jingy Tuason and William Chua (best ball) and Jackie Arellano-Luigi Tabuena (high-low) demolished their rivals via 5-4 decisions.

Iggy Clavecilla and Ed de Leon took the third point with a 3-2 victory in the scramble format. For Orchand, Timmy Owyong and Rene Unson averted a shutout loss when they took the aggregate fight.

Southwoods’ first two victories had come at the expense of Sta. Elena and Eastridge.
