Harris tourney unfolds today

-
The Paul Harris Cup, an 18-hole golf tournament organized by the Rotary Club of Makati Ayala to honor the memory and accomplishments of the founder of Rotary, will be played today at Tagaytay Midlands Golf and Country Club.

Tee-off time starts at 7 a.m. Participation in the tournament sponsored by CGU Insurance, ING Life Insurance, Aetna Healthcare, Now Cable Internet and PLDT is limited to Rotary clubs and Rotarians in good standing. Other backers of the tournament are BJ Marthel International, Broadband Philippines, Sheridan Linens, Nestlé, Cathay Pacific Airways, Transworld Trading, YKK Zippers, PET Plans, Calingasan Construction and Birch Tree Milk powder.

Paul Harris was a young lawyer in Chicago in 1905, when he founded a club of young men of different businesses and professions – men who wanted to be friends and be helpful to each other. The club was called "Rotary" since they were meeting in rotation at each other’s offices.

Today, the Rotary movement includes 1.18 million men and women members in more than 28,000 clubs in 163 countries.

The tournament employs a unique format that allows players without golf handicaps to compete side by side with those with handicaps.

In the individual competition, players with handicaps are divided into three groups – A for Hcp 0 to 12, B for 13 to 20 and C for 21 to 27. They will compete against each other in a Stableford format.
