Carrion assumes post as PSC commissioner

Philippine Sports Commission chairman Carlos Tuason yesterday formally announced President Arroyo’s appointment of aerobics guru Cynthia Carrion as the newest commissioner of the government sports agency.

Carrion’s appointment, reportedly approved by the President last week, was made public barely 24 hours after a large group of national athletes staged a protest rally seeking the ouster of Tuason and several other top PSC officials.

"Well, I’m happy to say that Ms. Carrion’s appointment is the latest development in the PSC. We are very happy that she has joined us here," said Tuason.

Carrion is a close friend of the President but her appointment was based on her capacity as president of the Philippine Sports Aerobics Association. She is also chairman of the National Women in Sports committee and founder of the fitness Professionals of the Phils.

"I’m here not because I’m a friend of the President. I’m here to make a dent and I assure you that I will follow the President’s objectives of good governance with results," Carrion told mediamen after Tuason’s announcement.

"I’ve been into sports all my life. I have a passion for sports and the President knows this since we were young. I will do what is proper and that includes my resignation as head of our National Aerobics Association." — Abac Cordero
