Peña, San Juan share chess lead

Businessman Douglas Peña and Dennis San Juan are tied for the lead in the Harmony section grand prix standings after two legs of the 2001 Philippine Executive Active Chess Express. Both have 36 points going into the third leg on Dec. 9 at Land Banks Multi-Purpose Hall in Makati City.
The year-long 11-leg event, best known by its acronym PEACE 2001, is being sponsored by DNS Company and organized by the Active Chess Center of Asia (ACCA) in cooperation with Land Bank, Belgosa Media Systems, Topmost Engineering, Travel Café and OMNI Business Center.
Dentist Jenny Mayor is in third place with 33 points. Defending champion Jose Aspiras follows with 28 points, while poet Ed Orozco is fifth with 27 points. Rounding out the top ten are Bobby Alba (6th) 26 points; Orlando Pascual (7th) 21 points; Melandro Singson, Romulo Silvestre and Gary Legaspi (8th-10th), 20 points each.
Romel Asogue leads the Serenity section with 36 points. Raul Villate and Cyrus Atienza are tied for second-third spots with 32 points apiece. Randy Cueto is fourth with 31 points; Jun Rivera (fifth), 26; Gunnar Abelido (sixth), 19; Rodolfo Mendoza and Erwin Calar (seventh-eighth), 17 each; Rogelio Taopa (ninth), 16; and Loreto Tabilog and Catalino Santos (10th-11th), 15 points each.
