Pacto tied for 10th; RP 2nd to last

-
CHA-AM, Thailand – Filipino Robert Pactolerin carded a 71 and finished joint 10th in the $200,000 Thailand Open won by South African Des Terblanche at the Springfield Royal Country Club.

Pactolerin’s closing one-under-par round gave him a 72-hole total of 276, seven strokes behind the winning 269 by Terblanche, who fired a 67 to win the crown worth $32,300.

Pactolerin, who shot a course-record 64 in the second round, won $3,476. Terblanche beat Thai ace Thongchai Jaidee, who had a 68-270, by one.

Rodrigo Cuello, who shared the first round lead, rallied with a 69 and salvaged a share of 33rd place at 280 worth $1,600. The other Filipino survivor, Mars Pucay, finished 45th ($1,080) with a 284 after a 70.

Over in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Mary Grace Estuesta and Jennifer Rosales sputtered in the individual medal format with a combined 154 score as the Philippines finished second-to-last in a field of 16 in the inaugural Women’s World Cup won by Australia.

It was a big letdown for Estuesta and Rosales, who bounced back from last place to 13th with a 67 in the better-ball format in the second round of the $1 million event at the Mines Resort and Golf Club here. They had a 299, 24 strokes behind the winning 275 of Aussie tandem Karrie Webb and Rachel Hetherington.

Webb, carding a 68, and Hetherington, shooting a 73, made a dramatic comeback in the final day to beat overnight leader Sweden by two strokes.

The Swedish sisters Annika Sorenstam and Charlotta finished on 277 after a 146.

Sweden, which had a overnight lead of three strokes coming into the final round, were six shots ahead of the Australians after the third hole, but went through a slump after the sixth hole.

Sweden were seven strokes behind the Australians after the ninth hole and despite rallying on the back nine, the Aussies maintained their lead to win.

The victory means the Aussies have now added their fourth World Cup to their already existing Rugby World Cup, Cricket World Cup and Rugby League World Cup. The American pair of Meg Mallon and Juli Inkster finished third with 280 after a 141.
