First choice Phenomenal, beaten by Wind Blown in the three-year-old Colts race last week, made a tremendous run in the last two quarters yesterday to capture the 2000 Philracom Grand Sprint Championship at the San Lazaro Hippodrome.
Eric Tagles Phenomenal, a three- year-old male bay by Lioubovnik out of Southern Gas, ran second in early part of the race behind pacesetter Flirting Hero before making his move in the last 400 meters together with Super Sharp.
Phenomenal then hang tough in the stretch to win by two lengths. Phenomenal, trained by Severino Andrade, was ridden by Jefril Zarate. Coming in third was My Preperido, followed by Blockbuster and Flirting Hero. Phenomenal was timed 1:27 with quartertimes of 12-23-25-27 for 1,425 meters.
Pre-race favorite Wind Blown was scratched earlier in the day but will definitely be back for the Presidential Gold Cup scheduled Dec. 10 also at San Lazaro. Ramon Romualdez
