Greenhills 2 rules Infocom golf

-

Greenhills 2 trudged through the rains and came up with a gutsy 140 to nip Greenhills I by three Stableford points in the rain-shortened East series of the Infocom Intervillage golf championship at the Valley Golf Club last Tuesday.

Herbert Chan, a 10-handicapper, and Johann Tan, playing with a handicap of 17, scored the maximum points allowed them, 20 and 19, respectively, as they powered Greenhills 2 to the top at the close of the first round action in the village series sponsored by Infocom Technologies and PLDT.

With Peter Chan tossing in another 19-point output and five others churning out respectable scores under tough playing conditions, the Greenhills 2 golfers turned back their counterparts from Greenhills I, who had a 137 in the event cut down to nine holes.

Tournament organizer Vince Villafuerte decided to reduce the 18-hole tournament to a nine-hole affair as heavy rains rendered the par-72, up-and-down Antipolo layout unplayable.

"After conferring with the team captains and rules official Buddy Resurreccion and Valley GM Jun Canilao, we decided to reduce the tournament to a 9-hole event since there were no indications that the rains would stop," said Villafuerte.

Other scorers for Greenhills 2 were David Ng (18), Michael Chan (17), skipper Eugene Go (16), Jeffrey Siy (16), and Samson Lim (15).

Greenhills I also played tough on Valley's soggy fairways as it drew a couple of 19 points from team captain Ernie Pilares and Tom Adarme and 18 from Sonny Go, while Honor Mendoza and Andy Co shot 17 points apiece. Also counting for team in the 12-to-play, eight-to-count format were Pit Lavarro (16), Paul Tanjutco (16) and Pablo Soon (15).

Monte Vista, led by Roy Etorma's 19 points, put in a 130 to snatch third place honors heading into the final round of this 36-hole championship supported by Home Cable, Smart Communications, Alaxan, ICTSI, BJ Marthel International, Menzi and Co., STI College, Callaway-Odyssey and McCallan Whisky.

Valle Verde 6 fell short of its bid with a 124, the same output put in by Loyola Grand Villas, although the fight for the top three slots among villages in Pasig, San Juan and Marikina is expected to heat up when the final 18 holes of the East series is played on June 19 at Eastridge.

Ronnie Littaua of Valle Verde 3 led the winners in the individual competitions with 16 points. The others were Herbert Chan of Greenhills 2 (Group 2), Loyola Grand Villas' Nelson Lim (Group 3), Ernie Pilares of Greenhills I (Group 4), Valle Verde 5's Tony Sevilla (Group 5), and Kapitolyo's Norman Cabrera (Group 6).
