CAP-John Hay dominates Corporate Cup

CAP-John Hay I proved no gracious host to the country's top corporate teams and a number of balikbayan squads as it dominated the 12th Philippine Corporate Cup golf team championship at John Hay Golf Club, scoring a whopping 34-point victory over CAP-Forest Hills in the premier division over the weekend.

Raffy Garcia, Harvey Robles, Charles Peterson and Chester Calpotura flashed their familiarity with the short but tricky par-68 layout as they put in solid rounds of 201 and 207 for 408 to run away with both the team and individual titles in Group I.

Garcia scored 52 and 54 points under the Molave system in the two-day event, while Robles had rounds of 51-54, Peterson 50-49 and Calpotura 48-50 for CAP-John Hay I, which played with a team handicap index of 4.00.

So solid was the host squad's scoring that Shean Bedi's 45-49 rounds didn't count in the five-to-play, four-to-count format event sponsored by Fil-Estate Group of Companies, CAP Life Phils., Smart Communications, Dynamic Sports and Leisure, San Miguel Beer, EZ-GO and Enriquez Securities.

CAP-Forest Hills Nicklaus, led by Jong Laput's 47-49 rounds, placed second with 374, followed by CAP-Southwoods Masters (373), Jechrist Gothic (363), Royce Motors (352) and Sherwood I (342) in that order.

Garcia's 36-hole total of 106 and Robles' 105 also made it a 1-2 finish for CAP-John Hay I in the individual event in Class A in this annual gathering of the country's golfing business executives and corporate bigwigs.

Triple-V I, powered by Danny Morales' 49-46, ruled Group II with a 365, beating PASGA (356) and Enrisec-Blue I (350). Morales also went on to win the individual plum.

Titleist topped the big Group III field with 326 with Guam I and CAP-Forest Hills Palmer finishing second and third with 323 and 317 points, respectively in the event which drew 19 teams. Relly Suarez of Leadway Const. won the top individual honors with 90 points in Class C.

The MTC squad of former PSC chair Cecil Hechanova nipped the Christopher Tang-backed Footjoy, 258-256, to snatch the Group IV plum with Louie Chan of Titleist copping the Class D individual crown with 88 points.
