Good Attitude is Power!

Unya kay after sa presentation sa Miss Talisay kay Upbeat Night man sab sa labing unang Tingog Nga Talisaynon, usa ka singing contest nga giparehas nila sa Sinulog Idol diin resident judge/mentor ko sulod sa siyam ka mga tuig. Hinungdan nga gihangyo ko ni Gloria Villarojo nga maoy producer sa maong duha ka singing contests nga palingkuron na lang sab ko isip guest commentator/mentor sa Tingog Talisaynon adtong gabhiona. Unya giingnan ko ni Ms. Gloria nga pahatagon ko og pieces of advice after sa performance sa nahabling siyam ka contestants adtong gabhiona. Nahabilin kay sama sa Sinulog Idol, matag gabii man sab ang tinaktakay sa Tingog Nga Talisaynon. Apan lima ka mga gabii lang ilaha, sa Sinulog Idol usa ka semana gyud.

Anyway, nagdalidali sab ko’g jot down og pieces of advice aron makapaambit sab ta ngadto sa contestants bisan gamay lang. So I’m sharing here the eight points nga akong gihatag ngadto sa contestants.

1. Give value to the genre. Upbeat means, dapat maka- move gyud not only you, but the audience too.

2. Pick the right song. Understand it. Dapat imong song is familiar to everybody.

3. Singing is storytelling gyud. When you sing, you are conveying a message. You want them to react, to feel something.

4. Establish rapport. Pick one or two people in the audience. Communicate as you perform. Draw confidence from that person.

5. Sing for your audience not for yourself. Take into consideration the reaction of your audience. Malingaw kaha sila aning akong kanta? When you are hired to perform, it is to entertain others, not entertain yourself.

6. Practice. Perform before a mirror. Record, take a video of your performance. Then review it. Watch it and take note unsay imong ganahan ug dili ganahan ana nga performance.

7. Do not be disappointed kun matagak ka. Or mapilde ka. This is a contest but it does not mean bala ka. It just means hilaw paka. And that is a good one because it means you still have a big room to improve and learn.

8. Learn, learn, learn. And dili maghinambugera. Because for me, as entertainment editor of Banat News and resident judge of Sinulog Idol for nine years already, I really don’t care kun ikaw pinaka talented, ikaw pinaka maayo. Because for me, attitude is really everything. Unsaon man na nakong talent kun labad kaayo ka ikatrabaho?
