Roque leads inauguration of P20M water system in Tanauan, Leyte

Primo A. Cayubit - The Freeman

TANAUAN, LEYTE, Philippines — Presidential Spokesperson, Secretary Harry Roque, yesterday led in the inauguration of the water system in Tanauan town of Leyte.

Leyte Governor Leopoldo Dominico Petilla told reporters that the installation of the water system, which Roque had inaugurated in this town, is intended for the barangays with no source of potable water yet.

The governor said the water system is being served by and connected to the main system of the Leyte Metropolitan Water District (LMWD), which serves Tacloban City and several towns of this province.

Petilla said that many barangays of this town are already connected and served by LMWD, and this new water system is part of the LMWD’s expansion program intended to serve more households in the province.

Tanauan Mayor Pelagio Tecson said the completion of the water system makes his town fully or served by the potable source of water from LMWD.

He said the water system, built at a cost of P20 million thru a fund grant from the Asian Development Bank, will serve 23 of 54 barangays of Tanauan

This water system project, started last year, is a level-two public faucet wherein households will just pay P1 per 5-gallon water container upon fetching the water. The barangay government unit will manage the collection and will also pay the water bill to LMWD, said the mayor.

Before the installation of the new water system, most households bought water from the downtown area — about three kilometers from the barangays — at P2 to P3 per 5-gallon container. Other households get water from deep wells or other sources in their respective barangays, Tecson added. (FREEMAN)
