Fire kills baby boy

Syril G. Repe - The Freeman

MABINAY, NEGROS ORIENTAL, Philippines — An 11-month-old baby boy died in a fire that razed the family’s house at around 7 a.m. Wednesday at Barangay Bagtic in Mabinay town of  Negros Oriental.

The boy, Junrey Bernabe was left behind by his older sibling, who quickly fled from their burning house, which was made of light materials.

The father, 58-year-old Roberto Bernabe was not around when the fire struck, while the mother left her children to buy sugar and soap from a store a kilometer away.

Police report said Junrey’s 3-year-old brother was playing with a lighter and accidentally burned a blanket causing the fire to spread and engulf the house. The elder boy immediately ran out but left behind his baby brother. (FREEMAN)
