LTO chief: Unable to print new driver’s licenses

Judy Flores Partlow - The Freeman

DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines — The absence of equipment for the issuance of new driver's licenses is becoming an inconvenience for many applicants who have to go to Dumaguete City from distant places for the purpose.

Alberta Janine Flores Lawas, district chief of the Land Transportation Office in Bayawan City, Negros Oriental, on Monday said her office could only issue a student permit for new applicants for a driver's license at this time.

The same is true with that of the LTO District Office in Bais City, as only the LTO-Dumaguete City District Office has the equipment to issue new driver's licenses.

Lawas said it is becoming a problem for new applicants who either continue to renew their student permit every so often, or spend time, money and effort in going to Dumaguete to apply for a new driver's license.

The LTO Bayawan district office's area of operations includes the towns of Siaton, Sta. Catalina and Basay, and Bayawan City itself.

It would take at least one hour to travel one way from Siaton to Dumaguete, while Basay, the farthest town down south, is about two hours or more travel to the capital city.

Not only that, the LTO-Bayawan office also caters to clients from Hinoba-an and Sipalay towns in Negros Occidental because Bayawan City is nearer for them that to travel all the way to Kabankalan or Himamaylan cities, on the other side of Negros island, explained Lawas.

Lawas further said she is now lobbying with the LTO-Region 7 office based in Cebu City to acquire the necessary equipment for the other district offices in Negros Oriental and cater to their clients' needs. (FREEMAN)
