Man’s suicide attempt sparks fire in La Paz

Jennifer P. Rendon - The Freeman

ILOILO CITY, Philippines — A man’s botched suicide resulted in a fire that burned 12 houses at Barangay Loboc in La Paz district of this city yesterday.

The Bureau of Fire Protection–Iloilo City said the fire started around 10:30 p.m. and quickly gobbled 12 houses up, four of which were only partially burned. No one was reported killed or injured.

The fire was declared under control around 11:05 p.m., or about 35 minutes later, and fire officials said the damage to property was pegged at P1 million.

According to Jose Cordova, whose house was among those razed, the fire started at the house of his brother, Jude, who allegedly attempted to kill himself by setting his room on fire. Probers however have yet to confirm this report.  (FREEMAN)
