CEBU, Philippines -  The Korea International Cooperation Agency  has earmarked US$10-million for the rehabilitation of three major ports destroyed by typhoon Yolanda last November 8.

In a press statement, Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor, Sr. said the project will start soon after KOICA sends a team of experts to inspect and validate the proposed rehabilitation of the ports of Concepcion, Carles and Estancia towns, all located in northern Iloilo.

“After their (KOICA team) assessment, an agreement will be forged between us,” said the governor, adding that the works are expected to start by October this year.

Earlier, KOICA senior deputy resident representative Kim Young-ram said the agency had appropriated US$20-million humanitarian aid to help the Philippines stand up from Yolanda’s devastation. As it is, half would be used to revitalize the fishing industry of Iloilo, through Northern Iloilo Comprehensive Fishery Rehabilitation and Development project.

On June 13, another Korean organization, Korea Saemaul Undong Center (KSMU), turned over new houses to 61 families who were displaced by Yolanda. Of these number, 26 recipients were from Bingawan town, specifically Brgys. Alabidhan and Maganhop, while 35 others were from Brgys. Moto and Bundulan of San Dionisio town.

Iloilo Provincial Planning and Development Office chief Mario Nillos, who also sit as president of Philippine Saemaul Undong, cited the numerous help extended by the Korean government to Iloilo province, such as the P200 million modern rice processing complex in Pototan and the upgrading of the province’s three district hospitals.

KOICA earlier turned over the P16-million worth of basic emergency obstetrics and newborn care equipment to the Iloilo provincial government. This was part of KOICA’s P300-million grant to improve delivery of basic health services, under its Iloilo Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Area’s health system strengthening project.

Kim said another set of equipment. worth US$1million will be given to Iloilo for the expansion and modernization of Aleosan District Hospital in Alimodian, Jesus M. Colmenares District Hospital in Balasan and Ricardo S. Provido Sr. Memorial District Hospital in Calinog. The works will start this August.
