Western Visayas' most wanted man falls’

Jennifer P. Rendon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - A 49-year-old fugitive, wanted for the killing of his neighbor 17 years ago was finally arrested Thursday morning, said Senior Superintendent Cornelio Salinas, Iloilo Provincial Police Office (IPPO) director.

Salinas said Cirilo Cambel was collared in his house at Barangay Santo Rosario in San Miguel town of Iloilo.

Joint operatives of the police stations of Leon and San Miguel towns, and those of the IPPO arrested Cambel by virtue of arrest warrant for murder docketed in Criminal Case No. 48-408 issued by Judge Tito Gustilo of RTC Branch 23, Iloilo City on May 28, 1997.

Latest validation had it that Cambel was Western Visayas's number 5 most wanted person.

Cambel did not resist as he calmly went with the arresting officers. He admitted killing his neighbor with a bolo over a petty argument at a basketball court.

Thinking that he would no longer be arrested, he did not hide anymore and had even served as a tanod of the barangay where he had been residing.

Cambel is presently detained for proper disposition of his case.  (FREEMAN)
