Ormoc LGU goes recycling

ORMOC CITY, Philippines — Instead of disposing away the tons of wasted roofing debris, caused by typhoon Yolanda, the city market administrator came up with an innovative approach to recycle and refabricate these into useful tools.

Dust pans, dirt scrapers, trash bins and various improvised tools ideal for the different market sections were among the output of the recycling program.

"Making use of the supposed waste materials into something useful does not only save government expenditures but also inspires our workers to be more productive," according to OIC Market Administrator Delia Vilbar. "We could not do it without the support of Mayor Edward Codilla," she added.

Codilla stationed his own metal bending machine in the market parking area, which now serves as the administration office, fabrication shop and motor pool when Yolanda rendered the previous offices useless.

City government workers are now fabricating the items with considerable speed due to the bending machine. They too have already started to assemble a combination of metal and iron sheet gates, upon the directive of the mayor.

"By utilizing the scrap materials as gates, we can improve the security, peace and order of the market premises," said Codilla.

The mayor has long been planning to eliminate crimes in the area especially at night when thieves and the like do their trade. "When the business establishments call it a day, the gates, to be place in all entry and exit points of the market premises, will also be closed," he added. (FREEMAN)
