PNoy lauds Bohol's spirit in recovery efforts

Ric V. Obedencio - The Freeman

LOON, BOHOL, Philippines — President Benigno Aquino III hailed Bohol's early recovery and rehabilitation efforts, rising from the rubble of earthquake that struck the province on Oct. 15, 2013.

"We are impressed by the resilience" of Bohol, Aquino told the crowd that jam-packed the grounds of earthquake-hit Cong. Natalio Castillo Memorial Hospital during his visit here last Feb. 24.

The president, who was late in coming here in the afternoon but candidly asked apology, also expressed thanks to the people and Bohol officials, led by Gov. Edgar Chatto, for showing unity and sacrifice to work together and rise again.

In his message, in the runup to the 28th anniversary of EDSA People's Power Revolution, Aquino cited "bayanihan" as driving force of the Boholanos in rising up again. He said "hindi kayo nag-iisa" obviously referring to the national government's extending aid, not only relief goods to the quake victims but also financial help to rebuild damaged homes.

The national government thru the DSWD has downloaded an initial check of P317.5 million to build 8,083 homes in 17 prioritized towns through the Habitat for Humanity Foundation. In building resilient houses, the National Housing Authority (NHA) also poured separately some P380 million.

Chatto also thanked the president, international agencies and the United Nations' bodies in extending help to Bohol.

Prior to his address in this town, Aquino inspected and saw for himself the bunkhouses built here for the shelters of an initial 100 families. He was accompanied by DILG Sec. Mar Roxas, Health Sec. Enrique Ona, Executive Sec. Paquito Ochoa, Sec. Sonny Coloma of the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) and Defense Sec. Voltaire Gazmin with their respective regional directors.  (FREEMAN)
