DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines — The newly appointed commander of the 79th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army, based in Siaton town of Negros Oriental, has assumed the post with the assurance of taking on the challenges left behind by his predecessor.

Lieutenant Col. Harold Pascua, took his oath Monday afternoon during ceremonies at the 79th IB headquarters, replacing Lt. Col. Marion Sison, who had served in the position for two years, two months and five days.

“It is a big challenge to lead the 79th IB and a big shoe to fill in, said Pascua, referring to the accomplishments of his predecessor and the tasks ahead of him.

Pascua called on local officials and the community to continue working together with the Philippine Army to bring peace and development. A united effort to end insurgency will certainly help improve the lives of the people, he said. “Security and development is a shared responsibility.”

Meanwhile, Sison in his valedictory speech thanked the local leaders, government agencies, NGOs and other stakeholders for their support and cooperation in reducing the insurgency problem in the area during his stint as 79th IB commander.

Major Gen. Aurelio Baladad, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, presided the turnover of command ceremony that was also attended by Governor Roel Degamo and other government officials. —(FREEMAN)
