Ormoc City government extends deadline
ORMOC CITY , Philippines — The deadline for registration of businesses for this year has been extended by the city government from January 20 to March 31.
Mayor Edward Codilla told The Freeman that he endorsed to the City Council the extension of the deadline due to the need of the business sector that incurred damages from typhoon Yolanda.
"We absorbed a direct hit (from Yolanda), hence, extending the deadline could somehow ease the pressure of businessmen who have homes and family to tend also," he said.
As of January 15, the city's Business Permits and Franchising Division (BPFD) has already assessed a total of 1,578 new and renewed business permits, generating more than P36.7 million in revenues to the city government, a figure that is lower than last year's.
BPFD Chief Emilio Tingson, in his explanation, attributed the difference in current due assessment to client's preferences. "They may opt to settle their obligations in quarterly, semi-annual or annual basis," he said.
Of the total 1,578 businesses, the most number was on micro-enterprises with 1345, followed by small enterprises with 180, medium with 35 and large with 18.
Tingson also mentioned the usual procedure of streamlining transaction as a great contributor in the issuance of business permits. "In less an hour, a client can already acquire a permit," he said, adding that his office had done the assessment of these businesses in only 10 working days.
He however clarified that the presence of the Bureau of Fire Protection desk inside the City Hall did not mean it will automatically issue to businesses a fire safety certificate.
"Together with the DTI and other signatories, BFP is around to facilitate documentary requirements. Inspection of establishments will be done later," Tingson said when asked about the safety of damaged structures in relation to approval of permits. (FREEMAN)
