Hilongos ends 2013 w/ Alikaraw Festival

Edison delos Santos Vilbar - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The local government of Hilongos town in Leyte, led by Mayor Albert Villahermosa, ended year 2013 with the annual celebration of Alikaraw Festival, which is a way of giving thanks to the Lord for the blessings He bestowed upon the town.

Contingents from different government agencies, private sector, non-government organizations and students participated in the parade and street dancing of people in colorful costumes, depicting various flowers.

Alikaraw Festival was highlighted with dances symbolizing gratitude to the imaginary petal fairies (water fairy, air fairy and light fairy) that sway their magic petals to ensure that flowers grow and bloom to their fullest.

These fairies serve as guardians of flowers to ensure that the environment is clean and best for healthy living, according to the organizers.

Alikaraw is a mythical celebration of flowers that, when these grow and bloom, indicate that the environment is in a better condition.

The most applauded participating group in the event was the Hilongos Frankpledge Organization, which was organized on May 28, 1984.

Frankpledge meant a community pledge, of which each man is responsible for the good conduct of the others, besides doing community service for a clean and green environment.  (FREEMAN)
