Low voter turnout in biggest village brings down city’s turnout rate
ORMOC CITY, Philippines — Representative Lucy Torres-Gomez (4th district, Leyte) last Tuesday turned over two road projects in this city that were started during her first term, and then graced a groundbreaking ceremony of a P 20-million public hospital building at Palompon town.
Lucy, together with husband Richard Gomez and Leyte 4th district Engr. Lino Gonzales, turned over a 205-meter multi-purpose pavement (MPP) to Barangay RM Tan, represented by outgoing Barangay Chairwoman Judith Marson and husband, incoming Brgy. Chairman Rudy Marson.
Gonzales said the MPP was funded through Lucy's Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF).
Lucy then turned over the completed 2.5-kilometer road in rites held at Brgy. Domonar, represented by outgoing Brgy. Chairman Armando Marson.
The project was constructed with P25-million funds from the Department of Agriculture and a counterpart P5 million from the PDAF of Lucy, said Gonzales.
Gonzales told the residents that the funds for the project was "stretched" to include the road opening that was 5 kilometers long, which now connects the village to Palompon town of Leyte.
Aside from reducing the cost of transporting farm produce to the city, he said that the travel distance from Ormoc to Palompon, has been reduced to 22 kilometers only from the usual 70 kilometers it would take to travel.
Lucy then urged the locals to take care of the roads for the present and future generations. She added that some of her projects might be stalled due to the freeze of PDAF, but vowed she will look for other ways to provide service to the people. —(FREEMAN)
