DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines  â€” The city government is set to observe today the International Coastal and Waterways Clean Up by spearheading cleanup activities of the city's coastlines and riverbanks.

The yearly activity, held every 3rd week of September and observed worldwide through various cleanup programs, will start at 7 a.m. today with participants from schools and universities, local and national government agencies and private institutions.

Aidalyn Celis Arabe, an active environmental advocate, said key groups coordinating the activity are the city government, the Negros Oriental LGU, the Coast Guard and its auxiliary group, the BPI Bayan, the DENR, the United States Peace Corps, the 302nd Infantry Brigade, 350.Org, the Philippine National Police, Foundation University, St. Paul University-Dumaguete and business establishments, among others.

"Our environment needs us to do something for the centuries of harm we humans have brought upon it. Remember, our food security lies in the environment we pollute or extract resources. Think about it!" Arabe said in a post on Facebook.

Environment and Natural Resources officer-in-charge Flora Ocao also said Dumaguete has for 15 years been in the forefront in the observance of the international clean-up drive.

City Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria had issued an order to all city government offices to support the clean-up and rid the coasts and waterways of waste materials. He urged all City Hall employees, non-government organizations and clubs to join the annual environmental activity.  (FREEMAN)
