Family of 3 electrocuted

Jennifer P. Rendon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Two brothers and their cousin died of electrocution while fishing at Brgy. Libertad in Tapaz town of Capiz Tuesday morning, local police said.

Brothers Benny Bonite, 38, and Andrei Bonite, 31, and their cousin, 23-year-old Hernan Bonite, went fishing at the Malitbog Bridge in their hinterland village when the incident happened.

Inspector Larnel Frial, Tapaz Police chief, said the three used an electrical device to electrocute fish, but it was Benny who got electrocuted instead. When Andrei tried to help, he too was zapped and when Hernan attempted to rescue the two, he became the third fatality.

Frial said the three died on the spot. It was their first time to use electrocution in catching fish that turned out to be their last.

It was gathered that a barangay ordinance has long been passed prohibiting the use of live wire in catching fish.  (FREEMAN)
