DepEd readies Grades 2, 8 teachers for K-12 program

Judy Flores Partlow - The Freeman

DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines — The Department of Education in Negros Oriental is all set to implement the new curriculum for Grades 2 and 8 under the K to 12 Basic Education Program.

Provincial schools division superintendent Salustiano Jimenez said Grade 2 teachers are now undergoing training from May 21 to 25, prior to the opening of classes in June, to prepare them for the new program. Grade 8 teachers have completed last week their own training in Cebu also for the K-12 program, he said.

Jimenez was confident that the changes will not be drastic even as some quarters have expressed concern over the new basic education curriculum that has been seen to put country in a competitive footing in the international academic community.

With the new curriculum, Negros Oriental would need additional teachers although currently the province is not lacking of them, he said.

Jimenez, however, admitted that the province needs more than 1,000 additional teachers, with about 700 items already provided by the DepEd since last August during the start of his term of office in Negros Oriental. --- (FREEMAN)
