Binay presents legislative plans
BAYBAY CITY, Philippines — UNA senatorial candidate Nancy Binay, reacting to results of surveys that show her sliding from the top, said the true measure of a candidate’s winnability in the elections are not the surveys.
“What is more important is on how I am welcomed warmly by the people during the sorties,†she told the local media here during the UNA proclamation rally of mayoral candidate Malot Galenzoga on Monday.
Presenting her legislative plans if elected to the Senate in the May 13 elections, Binay said that, as a mother, she knows the value of education of children, the reason why she would move for the establishment of more day-care centers around the country.
Binay also wanted to have a review of the country’s education system, especially on the percentage of funds released to state colleges and universities. She said the shortage of classrooms, which now runs to over 66,000, can be resolved if each legislator join forces by allocating part of their pork barrel to finance the construction of schoolbuildings.
When asked on the proposal for a legislated minimum wage for workers, Binay acknowledged that the right amount of increase must be studied thoroughly. She however said that, should it be inappropriate to raise the salaries, ways must be found to possibly lessen instead the deductions, such as taxes, to effect an increase in the net take-home-pay of workes.
Binay further declined to the open dare of Liberal Party bet Risa Hontiveros to a debate. “I would be willing to debate with her in the Senate instead. But we have to win first,†she said. (FREEMAN)
