Erna S. Gorne - The Freeman

MAASIN CITY , Philippines— This capital city of Southern Leyte province has recorded the lowest volume of crime rate in the region last year, according to records of the City Police.

Superintendent Elwin DeLa Cruz Fernandez, OIC of the City Police Station during the Action Center Kapihan sa Philippine Information Agency the other day, said Maasin bagged the most peaceful city award in  Eastern Visayas this year.

“With a downtrend variance of 45 crime volume from 2011 compared to 2012, Maasin City earlier recorded crime volume of 181 in 2011 and reduced to 136 in 2012,“ Fernandez said.

Unlike other cities in the region, Maasin City recorded the lowest crime incidence last year, even if “the rapid urbanization would also mean increase of crime incidence here,” he said.

Fernandez further reported that the local police have taken several measures to ensure a safe and fair election (SAFE) in May, among which are peace covenant signing among local candidates and daily conduct of check points. (FREEMAN)
