BACOLOD CITY  , Philippines — A 32-year-old vice-mayor in Negros Occidental succumbed to lung cancer yesterday (Friday) at the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City.

The death of Sagay City Vice Mayor Kent Javelosa was confirmed by Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr., who was also former mayor of Sagay.

Marañon said Javelosa’s death at a young age was a big loss to Sagay City and the province. The vice mayor was on his first term yet and was seeking for reelection in the 2013 polls, “he had a very bright future ahead of him,” said the governor.

“I’d like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family,” Marañon said, adding that he was very sad upon hearing the news.

He recalled that Javelosa was an advocate of organic farming. “He was a very progressive farmer,” Marañon said.  (FREEMAN)
