Soldier returns P50K cash find

JAMINDAN, CAPIZ, Philippines – Another soldier became a face of honesty in the ranks of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Initially, it was public interest that prevailed over Corporal Fernando Samperoy, a member of the 3rd Infantry Division’s 47th Infantry Battalion, into picking up a bag left at the parking area of the Cathedral at Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental Sunday.

Samperoy said he was driving his motorcycle after attending the Sunday Mass when he saw the bag. Out of curiosity, Samperoy checked what was inside the bag and was surprised to saw bundles of money.

“I searched inside the bag hoping to find any identification that will lead me to the name and address of whoever owns it but I found nothing,” he said, as he decided to go to the church and handed over the money to Father Recon Dagunan, the city’s parochial vicar.

It was later learned that the bag with P50,000 cash was owned by Rev. Father Leopoldo Cahilig, parish priest of Isabela town in Negros Occidental.

Last month, PFCs Danny Faigne and Marlon Vera, two soldiers from the 32nd Division Reconnaissance Company of the 3rd ID also found P70,000 cash while doing retrieval operations at the landslide site in Brgy Solonggon, La Libertad, Negros Oriental. They then informed their commanding officer 1st Lt. Gerald Deles who in turn was able to return the money to its owner Verannia Callora. - THE FREEMAN
