Gov. Chatto orders inspection of all gov't buildings in Bohol

TAGBILARAN CITY ,Philippines  — Amid reports on several cracks noticed in government buildings in different parts of the province, Governor Edgar Chatto said he wanted to have a complete report from all agencies regarding the condition of these buildings after the earthquake.

Chatto ordered the provincial engineer, municipal engineers, district engineers of the DPWH, and the engineer of DepEd to coordinate and ensure that all government buildings, including schools in the province, and private buildings—upon request of the owner—are checked for cracks even if these have no major damage.

The governor wanted to verify reports about cracks that were noticed in new buildings while the old ones appeared to be more resistant. He said an evaluation would then be conducted to see where the problem lies so that the provincial government can recommend appropriate measures.

“We are getting into the bottom by first getting every building assessed and evaluated. It must be also specified how many of the new buildings in the entire province have cracks and we should look into the accuracy of the report that old buildings have no cracks, because it is difficult to rely on general statements,” said Chatto.

Chatto wanted to get the assessment report from DepEd-Bohol Division Supt. Lorna Rances to enable him to evaluate the condition of the school buildings in the province.

If the evaluation shows structural defects in new buildings, then it would be checked if they are still covered by the warranty period, and experts can recommend appropriate interventions, he said.

Chatto also tapped barangay captains to help inspect the classrooms and mobilize engineers in their respective areas to speed up the work.
