DUMAGUETE CITY, , Philippines – Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia visited Negros Oriental province to personally hand over her province’s financial assistance to local government units there that were affected by typhoon Sendong.
Garcia gave a check of P1 million each to the local governments of Dumaguete City and Tanjay City, and P500,000 each to Valencia and Sibulan towns.
She told The Freeman that she wanted to suggest to the Regional Development Council (RDC) to pass a resolution urging the national government agencies to rebuild immediately the destroyed infrastructures in that province, and provide medical and other services.
Aside from the financial assistance, the Cebu provincial government sent 500 sacks of rice each to Dumaguete and Tanjay City, 250 sacks of rice each to Sibulan and Valencia towns.
“It is our duty to help. Sukad sakong first term ato na ning gihimo,” said Garcia, adding that Cebu wanted to show its sympathy to Negros Oriental for the latter’s destructions from Sendong. For one, Alegria town in southern Cebu also gave P100,000 to Tanjay City.
Sibulan town Vice Mayor Antonio Renacia, after receiving the check from Garcia, said the aid was a great help to Sibulan, especially to the families who lost their houses to the typhoon. The LGU further received P50,000 aid from Dumanjug town, and P15,000 from Samboan town of Cebu.
In Valencia Town, Mayor Ricky Gonzales got the check from the Cebu LGU, plus P25,000 from Alegria town, P50,000 from Dumanjug and P15,000 from Samboan.
Gonzales told The Freeman that the financial assistance received by the town will be used for assistance to the victim of Typhoon Sendong. “Dakong pasalamat nako nga siya (Gwen) pa gyud ang gadala sa tseke,” he said.
The Cebu LGU also handed financial aid to Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro City, which were also hit by typhoon Sendong. - THE FREEMAN
