Solon's bakery burgled

- Jennifer P. Rendon -

ILOILO CITY ,Philippines  — The bakeshop owned by the family of City Rep. Jerry Treñas was burglarized by a still unidentified man, in what the police theorized could be an inside job.

Carlo's Bakeshop's security guard Kim Arbi Bibit only discovered the incident sunrise of Sunday, after he noticed that the window, at the left portion at the back of the building adjacent to the house of the congressman, was opened.

Initial report stated that an undetermined cash and some displayed breads were taken from the bakeshop, but the official blotter said the bakeshop lost a laptop and a Nikon digital camera.

Bibit said his main task was to oversee the front side of the building and ensure that no one parks at the bakeshop's parking space, during its non-operational hours.

He however admitted he was somehow at fault. "Sa sobra man nga katuyo, napiyungan man ko," he said.

Senior Supt. Marietto Valerio, Iloilo City Police director, surmised it was an inside job. He said last Saturday's earnings of the bakeshop was quite "big," and it was kept just in there.

"The robber (sic) might have an idea where the money was kept because he concentrated his search on that portion of the store," he said.

The burglar, who was alone, and his act were caught on the establishment's closed circuit television, but the footage were quite hazy for the police to be able to determine his identity. "We still have to enhance it," Valerio said.

Aside from practically knowing where the money was kept, the burglar apparently knew where are the CCTV cameras were located. He reportedly detached some wires and cables to disable the cameras.

The possibility of an inside job was further strengthened after scene of the crime (SOCO) operatives also noted that the opened window was just used as an exit.

"There was no footprint that could indicate that he entered the store," Valerio said, adding that it was "possible he was already inside the store before it closed or he was made to enter the establishment."

Because of what happened, Valerio said he was embarrassed. "Nahihiya ako kay Congressman Treñas. Kasi kung nangyari sa kanya 'yun, how sure are we na hindi mangyayari 'yun sa mga simpleng tao," he told The FREEMAN.

Valerio vowed that the police would do everything they could to resolve the crime and arrest the culprit.
