ORMOC CITY, Philippines - – A gasoline pump boy was killed and a cashier shot on the back in a midday robbery of a gasoline station at Brgy. Cogon of this city yesterday.

Authorities identified the fatality as “Junjun” Maloloy-on, who died on the spot, and the wounded cashier as Julie Pepito, who is now in critical condition at the city’s OSPA-Farmers Medical Center.

Pepito was hit on her nape with the bullet penetrating her skull but got stuck on the left side of her eyes. As of press time yesterday afternoon, her condition according to the attending physician was not really secured.

One of the robbers got inside the small cashier’s booth and ordered Pepito and her assistant Alberto Barquera Jr. to drop while taking the money from the drawers into a pouch. Still the robber shot Pepito.

When Pepito was shot, Barquera thought he would be next so he grappled with the robber’s gun that subsequently fell to the floor, and this gave him the chance to grab the pouch with the money and run outside as quick as he could.

The robber fired shots but failed to hit Barquera from a distance, and decided to flee from the scene instead, without the money.

Maloloy-on, upon seeing the robber fleeing, gave chase while shouting for help. But another of the robbers, posted on the signage post, gunned down the pump boy who died on the spot.

While the robbery was going on, a third man of the robbers went behind the station’s building where the guard, Rene Espina, 24, together with the supervisor and another pump boy were about to take their lunch. The robber fired his gun at them but it jammed, and he also decided to run away.

Around 20 meters from the station, the three fleeing robbers grabbed a running red motorcycle, causing the driver, 31-year-old Jacqueline Boco, and passenger, her mother Isabellita Aradanza, to fall off the vehicle.

The robbers then drove the motorcycle towards the downtown area and, somewhere in Brgy. Canadieng, boarded a parked blue motorcycle, leaving behind the red one, and took off southward to Albuera town.

The Albuera policemen, upon receiving report of the incident, immediately put up a checkpoint at Brgy. Binulho where they arrested three men – on a blue motorcycle without plate number – who completely ignored by running through the checkpoint.

The three, who were considered the suspects in robbery, were being interrogated by the City Police, and would be subjected to paraffin tests. The police also conducted an autopsy on the fatality.

Meanwhile, the owners of the red motorcycle, Boco and Aradaza, were in shock and feeling disoriented that they could not yet testify if the three men arrested were the ones who snatched the vehicle from them at the gasoline station.

Boco and her mother suffered scrapes with the latter limping for possible sprain on her left leg caused by the sudden fall from the motorcycle. (FREEMAN)
