Imelda reminisces links with Bohol

- Ric V. Obedencio -

TAGBILARAN CITY , Philippines  - Former first lady and now congresswoman of Ilocos Norte Imelda Romualdez Marcos arrived in Bohol last Friday for several appointments, including the crowning of Miss Tubigon 2011 in its annual fiesta today, May 15.

After her arrival at the airport and before going to Tubigon town, she and her entourage made a stopover at the Capitol where she was welcomed by provincial officials and employees

Governor's executive assistant Billy Tongco, who was Antequera town mayor during her time as first lady, accompanied Imelda to the Capitol acacia grounds to speak for about five minutes. She later went to the Governor's Mansion where Governor Edgar Chatto was waiting for her.

The popular first lady, who was known for her love for expensive shoes and jewelry, still bore the regal aura with her distinctive hairdo, printed dark long dress and pants.

As a Bisaya who grew up in Leyte province, she fluently greeted the employees a good afternoon in vernacular: "I would like to let you know that every time I have an opportunity to come to Bohol I'd always do it. This is one of my favorite provinces in the country. I love the people here."

Imelda told Capitol employees about her busy work in recent days: "I am chairman of the United Nations millenium development goals to make plans the next thousand years for Mother Earth."

She cited the importance of Bohol history, referring to the Blood Compact and the Dagohoy revolt. "So you're a great people. It's a beautiful province and more you have a beautiful spirit. It is always a joy to come to Bohol."

On the geothermal power in Leyte being shared with Bohol, Imelda said it was her way of partaking development "goodies" to the province. "When I was the first lady I made sure Ferdinand must bring the electricity from Leyte to Bohol, my favorite neighbor."

Imelda then thanked the Boholanos for supporting her son Senator Bongbong Marcos in the 2010 elections, and concluded her speech with a promise. "I will do whatever I can for Bohol."
