MANILA, Philippines — Winasak ng men and women in uniform, kabilang ang mga aktibong miyembro at reservist sa military service, ang “stereotype at barriers” sa buong mundo, partikular sa larangan ng sports at beauty pageant.

Ito ang sinabi ni Se­nate Majority Leader Francis “Tol” Tolentino sa kanyang talumpati sa national finals ng Miss ROTC 2024 (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) na ginanap sa Tagaytay City noong Sabado, Agosto 17.

Sinabi ni Tolentino, isa ring Brigadier Gene­ral reservist ng Philippine Army, ang serbisyo sa militar ay napatuna­yang isang magandang training ground para sa mga lider na mahuhusay sa iba’t ibang larangan.

“There seems to be a trend, a trajectory towards the military, active and non-active, joining competitive sports and reaching the pinnacle, even the Olympics,” ani Tolentino. “Of all the participating teams in the Paris Olympics, 674 athletes came from the active as well as the reserve component of the military in 25 countries,” dagdag ng senador.

“Halos lahat po ‘yun, sundalo ‘yung mga nanalo. For instance, sa Team USA, lahat po ng mga nanalo sa target shooting, including the silver medalist, came from the US Army,” aniya pa.

Binanggit ng senador si US Army reservist Deshauna Barber na kinoronahang Miss USA at isa sa mga finalist ng Miss Universe pageant noong 2016, gayundin ang Hollywood actress na si Gal Gadot, dating Miss Israel na nagsilbi rin sa Israel Defense Forces.

Hindi pahuhuli ang Pilipinas, sinabi ni Tolentino na si Navy reser­vist Joanie Delgaco, ay naging kauna-unahang Pinoy na nag-qualify sa rowing sa Paris Olympics habang si Paris bronze medalist at Tokyo silver medalist Nesthy Petecio ay isang opisyal ng Philippine Coast Guard.
