Ex-Agriculture chief ‘not guilty’ sa graft

MANILA, Philippines — Naghain ng “not guilty plea” si dating Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala nang basahan na ng sakdal sa Sandiganbayan 5th Division sa kasong paglabag sa Anti Graft and Corrupt Practices Act na may kaugnayan sa sinabing monopolisasyon ng bawang mula 2010 hanggang 2014.

Bukod kay Alcala ay kasama rin sa binasahan ng sakdal sina dating Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) director Clarito Barron, dating National Plant Quarantine Services Division (NPQSD) chief Luben Marasigan at kasalukuyang NPQSD head Merle Palacpac at 20 pang pribadong indibidwal.

Base sa information sheet ng Ombudsman ina­­kusahan si Alcala, mga BPI at NPQSD ng pagpabor sa Philippine Vegetable Importers, Exporters, Vendors Association of the Philippines (PHILVIEVA) at mga incorporators nito dahilan upang magdulot ng undue injury sa gobyerno.

Ayon sa prosekusyon ito ang dahilan nang pagtaas ng bawang sa halagang P260 hanggang P400 kada kilo noong 2010 hanggang 2013.
