MANILA, Philippines — Nagtala ng impresibong unanimous decision win si Ian Clark Bautista upang umabante sa se-cond round ng 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships na ginaganap sa Yekaterinburg, Russia.

Inilabas ni Bautista ang matatalim na suntok upang mabilis na pigilan ang pagtatangka ni 6-foot Viliam Tanko ng Slovakia via 5-0 victory sa first round ng men’s featherweight (57 kgs.) division.

Makakasagupa ni Bautista si Mirko Jehiel Cuello ng Argentina na nakakuha ng opening-round bye sa torneong inorganisa ng International Boxing Association.

Si Bautista ang ikaapat na Pinoy pug sa second round.

Unang umusad sina Carlo Paalam, SEA Games gold medallists Eumir Felix Marcial at John Marvin sa kani-kaniyang dibisyon.

Nabiyayaan ng opening-round bye si Paalam sa men’s flyweight class (52 kgs.) samantalang nanaig si Marcial kay Bryan Angulo ng Ecuador sa men’s middleweight (75 kgs.) division at namayani si Marvin kay Pavilius Julevas ng Lithuania sa men’s light heavyweight (81 kgs.) class.

Ngunit nagtamo si Marvin ng sugat sa ibabaw ng kaniyang mata dahilan upang tahiin ito.

Dahil sa tinamong sugat, nagdesisyon ang pamunuan ng Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) na huwag nang palabanin si Marvin sa second round upang hindi maapektuhan ang kaniyang sugat.

“The doctors stitched John up but said that since he won’t be fighting until September 16, they were going to clear him to fight again,” ani head coach Ronald Chavez.

Nais ng ABAP na ipahinga si Marvin para sa mga susunod na torneong lalahukan nito gaya ng Southeast Asian Games sa Nobyembre at Olympic qualifying tournament sa Pebrero.

“We’d rather save him for the SEA Games and the Olympic qualifiers in February,” ani ABAP secretar-general Ed Picson.

Nakatakdang sumabak si James Palicte laban kay Jose Manuel Wafara ng Colombia kagabi sa men’s light welterweight (63 kgs.).
