Cray, beram planong ilaglag ng PATAFA?
MANILA, Philippines — Mababawasan ang tsansa ng Pinas sa gold medal sa Asian Games dahil kinokonsidera ng Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (Patafa) na huwag isama sina Eric Cray at Trenten Beram sa pambansang koponan na ipapadala sa Jakarta sa Agosto.
Inamin ni PATAFA president Philip Ella Juico kahapon na iniim-bestigahan ng asosasyon ang dalawang Filipino-American sprinters matapos malamang hindi sila sumali sa 2018 Korean Open noong nakaraang linggo dahil diumano sa “miscommunication.”
Kasama dapat nina Anfernee Lopena at Clinton Bautista sina Cray at Beram sa men’s 4x100-meter relay para maiangat pa lalo ang kanilang International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) ranking.
Sumulat sina Cray at Beram sa PATAFA at humi-ngi ng paumanhin sa hindi nila pagsali dahil diumano sa miscommunication ngunit hindi ito katanggap-tanggap kay Juico.
“The Korean Open is a very crucial tournament because we need to gain points for our IAAF ranking, which I would use in justifying their participation in the 4x100 event of the Asian Games,” ani Juico. “They didn’t even notify me. All they did was sent our secretary a two-paragraph explanation, saying that it was a simple case of miscommunication. I think it was very unacceptable and unfair on the part of the federation.”
Sina Cray at Beram ay inaasahang manalo ng gold sa Asian Games bilang mga top-caliber athletes.
Nanalo si Cray, two-time Olympian na naka-base sa Texas, sa men’s 400-meter hurdles event ng Southeast Asian Games ng tatlong beses sa apat na editions. Naka-silver din siya sa men’s 60-meter run ngAsian Indoor and Martial Arts Games noong nakaraang taon sa Turkmenis-tan. Naka-gold naman si Beram sa men’s 400-meter at 200-meter runs sa nakaraang SEA Games sa Malaysia. Sumali din sila sa Ayala Philippine Athle-tics Championship sa Ilagan City noong nakarang buwan bago bumalik sa United States para paghandaan ang Korean Open.
