Philippine jins may tina-target

MANILA, Philippines – Sasamantalahin ng Philippine Taekwondo Association (PTA) ang pamamahala sa Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament para mapa-lakas ang tsansa ng pagpapadala ng apat na atleta sa darating na 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Ito ang sinabi ni PTA chief executive officer Sung Chon Hong sa kanilang pangangasiwa sa Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament sa Abril 19-20.

“Of course, I want four (qualified jins) maximum,” wika ni Hong.

Higit-kumulang sa 400 jins at team officials mula sa Asya ang inaasahang makikipag-agawan para sa 16 tiket sa 2016 Olympiad.

“Well, it’s 50-50 (chance) because this is a tough tournament, that’s why I’m hosting it.  I hope to get four, if not, maybe three,” wika ni Hong.

Kasalukuyan pang pumipili ang PTA ng apat na Olympic aspirants mula sa kanilang national pool.

“All our athletes are very qualified but then it also depends on the luck of draw,” sabi ni Hong.

Sa debut ng taekwondo event sa Olympics noong 2000 ay ipinadala ng PTA sina Roberto Cruz, Donnie Geisler, Eva Ditan at Jasmine Strachan na bumandera sa Asian qualifiers na pinamahalaan ng bansa noong 1999 sa Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Muling lumaban si Geisler sa Olympics noong 2004 kasama sina Tshomlee Go at Toni Rivero at nagbalik sina Go at Rivero sa quadrennial event noong 2008.

Wala namang Pinoy na naisabak sa London Games dahil idinaos ang qualifying meet isang linggo matapos ang 2011 Southeast Asian Games.

Ang Asian Olympic Qualifiers ang una sa tatlong torneo na pamamahalaan ng PTA. (OL)
