Batang Gilas lalaban na lang para sa 15th place sa U17

DUBAI -- Ang nakadidismayang kampanya ng Ba­tang Gilas sa FIBA U17 World Championship ay hin­di nangangahulugan na wala nang mapupuntahan ang RP Youth basketball.

“This is not yet the end. This is just the beginning for RP Youth basketball,” sabi ni head coach Jamike Ja­rin, ang Ateneo de Manila University mentor na igi­ni­ya ang Batang Gilas sa runner-up finish noong 2013 FIBA Asia U16 Championship sa Tehran.

“This is just the start of our campaign in the world stage,” dagdag pa nito.

Walang naipanalong laro ang Batang Gilas sa ka­nilang anim na asignatura.

Natalo ang koponan ng average margin na 26.1 points sa mga world superpowers kagaya ng nagdedepensang United States, France, Greece at Argentina.

Wawakasan nila ang kanilang kampanya sa pag­harap sa United Arab Emirates.

Ang mananalo ang uupo sa 15th place sa naturang 16-nation field.

Laban sa Egypt, hindi naglaro si top gun Jolo Mendoza dahil sa isang pulled hamstring injury.

Umiskor sina Mike Nieto at Jollo Go ng 20 at 17 points, ayon sa pagkakasunod, sa kabiguan ng Batang Gilas sa Egyptians.

 “Again, the game plan of all the teams is to pound it inside,” wika ni Jarin. “We missed the services of Jo­lo and we shot poorly tonight. But on a positive note, we got the chance to play against the powerhouses of the entire world.”
