Hindi pa sigurado sa Asian Games ang SEAG gold at Asiad medals

MANILA, Philippines - Hindi magiging sapat ang gold medal sa Southeast Asian Games o ma-ging  ang anumang medalya sa nakaraang Asian Games sa Guangzhou, China para makatiyak ng puwesto sa Philippine team na sasabak sa 17th Asian Games na nakatakda sa Setyembre 19-Oktubre 4 sa Incheon, South Korea.

Sinabi ni Phil. Sports Commission chairman at Asian Games chief of mission Richie Garcia na ang isang atleta ay dapat tumapos sa top 5 ng isang Asian-caliber event para mapasama sa koponan na isasabak sa quadrennial game.

“A SEA Games gold isn’t assurance that you will make the team to Incheon,” wika ni Garcia kahapon sa unang consultative meeting ng Asian Games Task Force at ng National Sports Associations sa PSC admi-nistration building sa Vito Cruz, Manila. “A medal in the last Asian Games will not be enough because we will start comparing performances only as far as 2011.”

“For objective sports, the personal best of an athlete should at least in the top five in Asia. For subjective disciplines, you should be in the top five in Asia to make it to Incheon,” dagdag pa nito.

Sa kriterya ng Task Force, tanging ang Gilas Pilipinas, ang World Cup-bound men’s basketball team na sumegunda sa FIBA-Asia Championship na idinaos sa MOA Arena noong 2013, ang awtomatikong makakapasa.

Makakasama rin ang Blu Girls na pumang-apat sa Asian Championship at ang rugby team na tumapos sa ikaapat sa HSBC’s World Sevens.

Maaari ring pumasa si Fil-Am Treat Huey matapos makapasok sa quarterfinals sa doubles event ng Australian Open katuwang si Great Britian netter Dominic Inglot bilang kanyang partner. Si Huey ay No. 22 sa mundo at ikaapat sa Asya sa likod nina Leander Paes at Rohan Bopanna ng India at Aisam-ul-haq Qureshi ng Pakistan.
