Mahihirapan ang St. Clare na idepensa ang titulo sa NAASCU

MANILA, Philippines - Mahihirapan ang St. Clare na idepensa ang kanilang men’s basketball title dahil sa pagkawala ng dalawang key players sa ika-13th season ng National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) na magbubukas sa August 13 sa Makati Coliseum.

Wala na ang mga gunners na sina Jeff Viernes at Eugene Torres sa pagtatanggol ng Saints  ng kanilang titulo na sisimulan nila kontra sa Centro Escolar University sa opening day na  triple-header.

Sa alas-11:00 ng umaga, makakasagupa ng reigning champions ang Scorpions sa rematch ng finals noong nakaraang taon na napagwagian ng St. Claire, via sweep, 2-0.

Makakasagupa naman ng host school Fatima University ang City University of Pasay sa second game sa alauna ng hapon kasunod ang sagupaan ng Rizal Technological University at New Era University sa alas-3:00 ng hapon.

 â€œAnything can happen in this tournament,” sabi ni Dr. Jay Adalem ng St. Clare, ang kasaluku-yang NAASCU chairman kahapon sa lingguhang Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum sa Shakey’s Malate. “We really need to step up in order for us to defend our title.”

Sinabi naman ni league president Dr. Vic Santos ng Fatima University na ang Phoenix ang tournament dark horse matapos mapanatiling intact ang kanilang team mula noong nakaraang taon at ang pagkakaluklok ng kanilang dating juniors coach at dating San Beda stalwart at National team player na si Ralph Rivera bilang head coach ng kanilang varsity team.
