3 Pinoy boxers na ang palaban sa gold

GUIYANG, China – Tatlong boksingero ng PLDT-ABAP national boxing team ang umabante sa finals ng China Open Boxing tampok ang 30-27 panalo ni Junel Cantancio kay Wang Bo ng China sa lightweight division sa semifinal round.

Kinontrol ng 27-anyos na si Cantancio ang kanilang laban ng Chinese fighter patungo sa gold medal round.

Sinamahan ni Cantancio sa finals sina Josie Gabuco na haharap kay Xu Shiqi, tinalo niya sa finals ng world championships sa Qinhuangdao, China noong nakaraang taon at Nesthy Petecio na makakasagupa si Alexis Pritchard ng New Zealand, sa finals.

Nauna nang pinayukod ni Gabuco sina 2012 London silver medalist at 3-time world champion Ren Cancan sa semis.

Ikinatuwa ni ABAP president Ricky Vargas ang pagkakapasok ng tatlong boksingero sa finals at nagsabing “let’s work at getting more next time.”

Hindi naman sinuwerte si 2012 London Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga matapos matalo kay Guiyang native Wu Zhonglin sa unanimous decision.

Nabigo si Barriga, kinailangang dalhin sa ospital matapos mabalian ng kaliwang hinlalaki sa third round, na mapag-aralan ang istilo ni Wu hanggang sa matapos ang kanilang laban.

Dahil dito, nakamit ng Panabo, Davao del Norte native ang bronze medal sa light flyweight category.

“They need to know how to adjust their game to the system. We had a lengthy meeting after the fights this afternoon with the coaches and boxers to explain to them in more detail what they need to do to take advantage of the new rule,” sabi ni ABP executive director Ed Picson.

 Sa kabuuang 13 finals bouts, siyam dito ay mga Chinese boxers.
