Qatar tinik sa lalamunan ng Gilas

MANILA, Philippines - Kagaya ng Lebanon, magpaparada din ang Qatar ng mahusay na naturalized player sa 27th FIBA Asia Championship at maaaring maging mahigpit na kalaban ng Gilas Pilipinas sa nasabing preliminary round ng Asian world qualifier sa Agosto.

Anim na linggo bago ang torneo, tatlong naturalize candidates ang nasa listahan ng Qatar.

Ito ay sina 6-foot-8 forward Jarvis Hayes, 6-foot-5 guard Trey Johnson at playmaker in Boney Watson.

Si Hayes, 2003 NBA draft 10th pick, ang sinasabing top choice para sa Qatar na hangad makabangon mula sa kanilang 16th-place finish sa Wuhan, China.

Ang problema sa legitimacy ng karamihan sa kanilang mga players ang nagresulta sa kanilang kabiguan sa 2011 Wuhan meet.

Tinalo na ng Qatar ang Gilas Pilipinas para sa third place sa 4th FIBA Asia Cup sa Tokyo, Japan.

Bumandera para sa Qatar sa Tokyo si Johnson, isang three-year NBA vete-ran na naglaro para sa Cleveland, Toronto, LA Lakers at New Orleans.

“We don’t see it as a problem as we have three quality players who provide us with options and also gives us some insurance from injury. As training starts, the frontrunner for the spot is Jarvis Hayes,” wika ni Qatar coach Tom Wisman sa isang on-line report.

Si Hayes ang 10th pick ng Washington Wizards sa draft class na kinabibilangan nina LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade at Chris Bosh.

Naging back up kay Jerry Stackhouse, nagtala si Hayes ng average na career-best 10.2 points noong 2004-05 campaign at 8.3 points sa 427 laro mula 2003 hanggang 2010.

Kasama ng Qatar sa Group B ang Lebanon, Japan at Hong Kong in Group B.
