Accel-PBA Press Corps player of the week

MANILA, Philippines - Pagkatapos maging pinaka-consistent na local player sa pagpapahaba sa all-time franchise-best win streak ng Air21 sa apat na sunod na laro, si Mike Cortez ang nahirang na Accel Player of the Week ng PBA Press Corps para sa linggo mula March 18 hanggang 24.

Nag-average si Cortez ng 13.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists, 3.5 steals at 1.0 shotblock sa naging dalawang panalo ng Express nitong nakaraang linggo kontra sa San Mig Coffee at Globalport.

Tinalo ni Cortez para sa nasabing parangal sina LA Tenorio ng Barangay Ginebra, Mark Barroca ng San Mig Coffee, Gabe Norwood ng Rain or Shine at teammates Wynne Arboleda at KG Canaleta.

Halos makonsensya na si Air21 head coach Franz Pumaren sa pagpapagawa sa 32-anyos na si Cortez ng halos lahat para sa ikapapanalo ng koponan.

“Right now we are not only asking him to run the team but to score also,” pahayag ni Pumaren. “That’s why once in a while we are using him as a 2-guard.”

Nag-a-average sa conference si Cortez ng 11.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.1 assists at 1.5 steals, ang huling dalawang numero ay pang-anim sa overall ng torneo. Ang 10-year PBA veteran at No. 1 overall pick noong 2003 annual Draft na si Cortez ang naging kauna-unahang player mula sa prangkisa ng Air21/Shopinas.com na nahirang na Player of the Week sa liga.

Ito rin ang kauna-unahang Player of the Week na parangal ni Cortez pagkatapos ng halos isang taon, o mula nang nahirang na co-Player of the Week kasama ni Mark Cardona ng Meralco noong  March 26 hanggang April 1 ng nakaraang taon habang naglalaro pa para sa Ginebra.
