MANILA, Philippines — Inayudahan ng Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) ang mga mangingisda, vendors at mga pamilyang naapektuhan ng oil spill sa Oriental Mindoro dahil sa paglubog ng motor tanker (MT) Princess Empress na may kargang 800,000 sa karagatan ng Oriental Mindoro.

Personal na pinangunahan kahapon ni DSWD Secretary Rex Gatcha­lian at ilan pang opisyal ang pamamahagi ng ayuda sa ilalim ng Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations at cash-for-work programs ng DSWD.

Sinabi ni Gatchalian, 7,000 apektadong pamil­ya sa anim na bayan ng Orien­tal Mindoro na kinabibila­ngan ng Naujan, Pola, Pinamalayan, Bonga­bong, Gloria, at Bansud ang binigyan ng food packs ng DSWD sa pakikipagtulungan ni Oriental Mindoro Governor Bonz Dolor.

“The number of affected families may even reach 10,000 but the DSWD is ready,” dagdag ni Gatchalian.

Inihahanda na ng Orien­tal DSWD MIMAROPA ang P78.9 milyong standby at stockpile funds na kapapalooban ng 42,400 FFPs, at standby funds na may halagang P7.2 milyon para gamiting augment assistance sa mga apektadong bayan ng Oriental Mindoro.

Samantala, patuloy sa pagbusisi ng Department of Environment amd Natural Resources (DENR) ang pinsala sa karagatan na idinulot ng oil spill sa Naujan, Oriental Mindoro.

Nabatid na aabot sa 41-kilometer radius na tinatayang nasa 591 ektar­yang coral reefs, 1,626 ektaryang mangroves at 362 ektaryang seagrass/seaweeds ang maaaring masira dahil sa oil spill base sa ginawang aerial surveillance at site assessment kahapon nina DENR Secretary Antonio Loyzaga, Undersecretary for Integrated Environmental Science Carlos Primo David, Dr. Fernando Siringan ng University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute (UP-MSI) at mga miyembro ng DENR Oil Spill Task Force sa naturang lugar.

Anila, nasa 21 locally managed marine protected areas (LMMPAs) ang nasa Calapan.

“Initial findings estimate the length of the oil slick to be 25 Km trending NE-SW and most of the oil is confined in a narrow band of approximately 300-500 meters. The potential for the oil to reach northern Palawan was also discussed,” pahayag ni Secretary Loyzaga.

Anila, nanganganib din na maapektuhan sa oil spill ang Verde Island Passage at nagsasagawa na nga­yon ang DENR at UP-MSI ng disaster forensics para sa naturang insidente.

Magpapadala naman ng dalawang barko, ang BRP Hydrographer Ventura at BRP Hydrographer Presbitero sa Naujan para magsagawa ng multibeam survey upang matukoy kung nasaan ang lumubog na barko.
