Tolentino lalaban sa gold sa Asian athletics

BANGKOK — Nakapasok si John Christopher Cabang Tolentino sa finals ng men’s 110m hurdles matapos sumegunda sa heat sa 25th Asian Athletics Championships sa Supachalasai National Stadium.

Nagtala ang 21-anyos na si Tolentino ng 13.70 segundo kasama si Japanese Shunya Takayama na nanguna sa heat kasunod si Yefremov David (13.85) ng Kazakhstan patungo sa medal race.

Makakasama ng Fil-Spanish hurdler, may hawak ng national record na 13.65 segundo, sa finals sina Chinese Zhuoyi Xu (13.57), Ning Xiaohan (13.62), Yaqoub Al Youha (13.62) ng Kuwait at Taiga Yokochi (13.63) ng Japan.

“I feel great. I hope to run a better race tomorrow (Friday),” ani Tolentino na bronze medalist sa 32nd Southeast Asian Games sa Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Pumang-apat naman si SEA Games champion Clinton Knightley Bautista sa third heat sa kanyang 13.99 segundo at hindi umabante sa finals.

Samantala, tatakbo si six-time SEA Games champion Eric Cray sa men’s 400m hurdles para sa koponang suportado ng Philippine Sports Commission at Philippine Olympic Committee at sponsor CEL Logistics.

Matapos ang qualifying heat ni Cray ay sasalang naman si SEA Games gold medalist Janry Ubas sa men’s long jump qualifier.

Kabuuang 23 atleta ang dala ni Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) president Terry Capistrano sa continental meet na gagawing basehan sa pagbuo ng final lineup para sa 19th Asian Games sa Hangzhou, China sa Setyembre.

Noong Martes ay nailuklok si Capistrano sa eight-man council ng Asian Athletic Association para sa puwesto ng Pinas sa continental governing body para sa track and field.

Kasama ni Capistrano sa five-day meet sina PATAFA executive vice president Guillermo Torres, Patafa secretary general Edward Kho, national trai­ning director Reynato Unso at team manager Jasper Tanhueco.
